Festival Pysanka

The festival Pysanka (Easter/Decorated egg) is held regularly during last decade in the town of Kolomyia on the bank of the river Prut. Here, annually, in the first Saturday-Sunday after the celebration of the Resurrection of Christ, one can discover the real and incomparable Ukrainian tradition and art inspired by national spirit and energy.

Festival days consist of exhibitions, concerts, master classes of different crafts and popular art. The program of the festival includes

- gala opening,

- pubic contest of the egg painting,

- artistic performances: songs, Easter games, theatre and choreographic compositions,

- round tables, conferences, literature parties.

The main place of the festival is the Municipal Palace of Culture “Folk House” and the city square, with unique museum in the world, the Museum of Easter Egg Painting. As usual, above 1500 participants of different ages take part in the festival which is supported by the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, Department of Culture, Nationalities and Religions of Ivano-Frankivsk Regional State Administration, Kolomyia City Hall, National Museum of Folk Art of Hutsul and Pokuttia Regions named after Y. Kobrynsky, and the Museum of Easter Egg Painting.

The art of Easter egg painting is historically common for all regions of Ukraine having special peculiarities in each place, city or even village and settlement. Today, this art is uniting not only past and present but also the whole Ukraine. The festival exhibitions embrace different types of decorative and applied arts: basket weaving, carving, embroidery, weaving, pottery, carpet making, cooperage, national costume making, artworks of leather, beading, cheese, etc.
