Flying Carpet Festival 2026 (8th Edition)
The Flying Carpet Festival 2026 returns for its highly anticipated next edition from August 21 to September 1, 2026. Set against the deeply historic backdrop of Mardin, Türkiye, and expanding into remote villages along the Turkish-Syrian border, this year’s edition marks a profound moment of growth. Fresh off the heels of founder Sahba Aminikia being named a laureate of the prestigious 2025 Aga Khan Music Award, the 2026 festival channels this global recognition into an amplified, world-class mobile arts initiative for refugee and traumatized children living in conflict zones.
By positioning itself intentionally at geopolitical borders, Flying Carpet 2026 directly challenges traditional notions of cultural centers and peripheries. It replaces environments scarred by war and displacement with spaces of radical imagination, collective healing, and vibrant cross-cultural solidarity.
Artistic Lineup & Global Solidarity
This edition convenes a premier collective of 42 international volunteer artists representing 20 countries across four continents. In close partnership with the Sirkhane Social Circus School (founded by Turkish filmmaker and social entrepreneur Pınar Demiral), the festival creates a unique residency in Mardin where world-class professionals and local youth co-create a unified, magical experience.
These artists bridge vastly different geographies, blending acoustic music, contemporary circus arts, puppetry, digital media, and regional storytelling into a singular, cohesive narrative context.
Core Programming & Mobile Outreach
The 2026 edition functions simultaneously as an elite creative lab and an expansive humanitarian deployment. The structure of this edition centers on three primary pillars:
• Mobile Performances: Operating on a literal "portable carpet" platform, a unified touring production travels out of central Mardin into marginalized, remote border villages. These shows bring world-class acrobatics, live music, and physical theater directly to children who are entirely cut off from mainstream cultural opportunities.
• Trauma-Informed Workshops: Daily interactive sessions in music production, visual arts, movement, and circus skills (such as juggling and acrobatics). These workshops utilize social circus pedagogy to restore psychological safety, rebuild self-confidence, and provide essential trauma relief.
• The Co-Creation Platform: Rather than just performing for the children, the visiting professionals actively partner with local youth. Together, they build a collaborative learning ecosystem where the children's own stories, languages (including Arabic, Kurdish, and Turkish), and imaginations take center stage.
Amplified by International Honors
Entering the 2026 cycle with the backing and recognition of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, the festival has evolved from a grassroots collective into a globally celebrated model for social change. The 2026 edition stands as a living testament to the power of beauty and light as spiritual healing. By treating children not merely as victims of war, but as the very architects of a brighter, shared global future, the Flying Carpet Festival 2026 weaves a legacy of peace, resilience, and unyielding joy.
